All about Yurt Sizing
Learn more about different sizes of wooden yurts and find the perfect yurt size for you. Square footage and height both matter when deciding on your next yurt size.
Smiling Woods Yurts makes wooden yurts in many different sizes, from our 20 foot Birch up to our 41 foot Sequoia. Yurts are typically measured by their diameter. You'll also want to carefully consider wall height -- many traditional Mongolian yurts are only 6 feet tall at the walls, while more modern fabric yurts may have 7 foot walls. Smiling Woods Yurts walls are 8 feet tall by default, and can be customized up to 20 feet tall for unique projects. If you're considering a full or partial loft, you'll want at least 12 foot high walls to allow plenty of light into the loft.
20 foot yurts (like the Smiling Woods Birch 20) are perfect for a small couples' getaway or guest house, at 320 square feet. Some traditional fabric yurt manufacturers make 12-foot, 14-foot, 16-foot or 18-foot yurts (as small as 150-200 square feet) that are designed for year-round living, but this small of a yurt is hard to fit much into. Our 20 foot Birch 20 can fit a small kitchenette, 3/4 bath, and bed. Or use it as a primary suite as part of a multi-yurt compound.
25 foot yurts (like the Smiling Woods Maple 25, at nearly 500 square feet) are perfect for a small family getaway, guest house, or year-round living for a couple. Some traditional fabric yurt manufacturers make 21-foot, 24-foot, or 27-foot yurts that are of a similar size, though they may not have the same ability to upgrade to taller walls and add light-filled lofts. If you are considering living year-round in a yurt, you'll want to consider a 25-foot unit, perhaps with a loft.
30 foot yurts (like to Smiling Woods Cedar 30, at over 700 square feet) are perfect for a small family getaway or year-round living for a couple. Some traditional fabric yurt manufacturers make 27-foot or 30-foot yurts that are of a similar size, though they may not have the same ability to upgrade to taller walls and add light-filled lofts. If you are a couple or small family considering living year-round in a yurt, you'll want to consider a 30-foot unit, perhaps with a loft.
35 foot yurts (like to Smiling Woods Ponderosa 35, at nearly 1000 square feet) are perfect for a family getaway or year-round living for a small family. Some traditional fabric yurt manufacturers make 35-foot yurts that are of a similar size, though they may not have the same ability to upgrade to taller walls and add large light-filled lofts. If you are a family considering living year-round in a yurt, you'll want to consider a 35-foot unit, perhaps with a loft.
40 foot yurts (like to Smiling Woods Sequoia 41, at over 1200 square feet) are perfect for a larger family getaway or year-round living. Some traditional fabric yurt manufacturers make 40-foot yurts that are of a similar size, though they may not have the same ability to upgrade to taller walls and add large light-filled lofts. If you are a family considering living year-round in a yurt, you'll want to consider a 41-foot yurt, perhaps with a loft.
Because Smiling Woods Yurts are comfortable spaces, with super-efficient traffic and air flow, they live larger than a rectangular building. But if you need more space than a Sequoia 41, a Ponderosa 35 or Sequoia 41 paired with a Birch 20 or Maple 25 primary suite in a tandem yurt is a great option.
